External Affairs Minister (EAM) Dr. S. Jaishankar has concluded his official visit to South Africa and Namibia, which served to further strengthen India’s bonds with these nations. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has highlighted the significance of the visit in cementing the strong friendship between India and South Africa as well as Namibia.
South Africa Visit
During his visit to South Africa from June 1-3, EAM Jaishankar participated in the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting and the Friends of BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting on June 1 and 2, respectively. The discussions during these meetings provided a platform for India to present its positions on global and regional developments, global economic recovery, and the functioning of multilateral institutions, including BRICS. The meetings concluded with the issuance of a Joint BRICS Foreign Ministers Statement on June 1.
EAM Jaishankar also held separate interactions with the South African Foreign Minister, Ms. Naledi Pandor, and other foreign ministers attending the BRICS and Friends of BRICS meetings. In addition, he called on the President of South Africa along with other BRICS ministers. While in Cape Town, EAM Jaishankar addressed and interacted with the Indian community, highlighting the 30 years of diplomatic relations between India and South Africa, the 15-year journey of BRICS, and the achievements of the Indian government over the past nine years.
Namibia Visit
From June 4-6, EAM Jaishankar visited Namibia, marking the first visit by an External Affairs Minister of India to the country. During the visit, EAM Jaishankar called on H.E. Mr. Hage Geingob, the President of Namibia, and co-chaired the inaugural session of the Joint Commission Meeting with the Namibian Deputy Prime Minister/Foreign Minister, Ms. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah.
EAM Jaishankar also addressed the Indian Diaspora in Namibia and met with the Indian diamond business community. Furthermore, he formally inaugurated the India-Namibia Centre of Excellence in Information Technology (INCEIT) in Windhoek, in the presence of the Deputy Prime Minister and the Minister of Higher Education.
Strengthening Bonds of Friendship
The visit provided an opportunity for high-level interactions in both South Africa and Namibia, further strengthening the already strong bonds of friendship between India and these countries. The MEA’s statement emphasized the positive outcomes of the visit in enhancing India’s relations with South Africa and Namibia.
