An FIR has been lodged against eight Karnataka Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) workers for allegedly abusing a woman MLA from the Janata Dal (Secular) (JD(S)) in Raichur district. The incident occurred when the MLA, Kariyamma G. Nayak, visited Aladamarada Tanda in Arakera taluk following the death of a lineman due to electrocution. The accused BJP workers allegedly hurled abuses and expletives at the MLA. A video of the incident went viral on social media, leading to further investigation by the police.
Allegations of Delayed Response and Protest Against Non-Implementation of Poll Guarantees
The BJP workers accused MLA Kariyamma of arriving late at the scene where the lineman had died. In response to this incident, BJP workers held a demonstration in Bengaluru, protesting against the Congress and alleging that the state government has failed to deliver on its five poll guarantees made before the Karnataka elections. The protest also arose from Karnataka’s Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Sciences Minister K Venkatesh’s statement regarding the slaughter of buffaloes and cows.
Minister’s Statement on Slaughter of Buffaloes and Cows
Minister K Venkatesh stated that the previous BJP government had allowed the slaughter of buffaloes and male buffaloes but had prohibited cow slaughter through the Karnataka Prevention of Cow Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle (Amendment) Bill, 2020. The ruling Congress in Karnataka is currently considering the implementation of this bill, which was passed in the state legislative Assembly in 2021 when the BJP was in power. Former Karnataka Chief Minister and BJP leader Basavaraj Bommai condemned the minister’s statement, emphasizing the emotional connection and reverence Indians have for cows.
The investigation into the alleged abuse of the JD(S) MLA by the BJP workers is ongoing, and the FIR has been lodged at Devadurga police station in Raichur district.
