Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman spoke at the Peterson Institute of International Economics on Free Trade Agreement in Washington. While responding to a question about violence against Muslims in India and negative western perceptions of India, Sitharaman said that India has the second largest Muslim population in the world and that it is only growing in numbers.
Contrasting with Pakistan
Sitharaman contrasted the situation in India with that in Pakistan, where many Muslim sects are subjected to violence by the majority sect. She said that every minority has been dwindling in its number or decimated in Pakistan, while in India, every strand of Muslim is doing their business, their children are being educated, and given fellowships.
Law and Order is a State Subject
Sitharaman also addressed the issue of law and order, stating that it is a state subject and that across the board in India, if violence is happening to make Muslims get affected itself is a fallacious statement. She also questioned whether the population has dwindled or debts have been disproportionately high in any particular community between 2014 and today.
