The central government has extended the deadline for linking Aadhaar to ration cards to September 30, 2023. This decision aims to enhance efficiency and transparency in the distribution process through the digitization of ration cards.
Importance of Ration Cards
Ration cards are crucial in facilitating access to subsidized food grains and fuel for households. They serve as proof of identity and address and play a significant role in ensuring the fair distribution of resources.
Objective of Public Distribution System (PDS) Reforms
The government aims to improve efficiency and transparency in the distribution process through the digitization of ration cards and beneficiaries. This involves utilizing electronic Point of Sale (ePoS) devices to distribute highly subsidized food grains to targeted beneficiaries under the National Food Security Act (NFSA). Biometric or Aadhaar authentication is employed to ensure accurate and fair distribution.
Deadline Extension and Announcement
Initially, the deadline for linking Aadhaar to ration cards was set for June 30. However, the central government has extended the deadline to September 30, 2023. This extension was announced through a gazette notification issued by the Department of Food and Public Distribution on June 15, 2023.
