Harry Brook Attributes England’s Struggles in First T20I to Kolkata Smog

In the aftermath of England’s seven-wicket defeat to India in the first T20I at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, vice captain Harry Brook highlighted the city’s smog as a significant factor contributing to their batting challenges. The match, held on January 22, 2025, saw England bowled out for 132 with India’s spinners playing a pivotal role.

England’s innings was anchored by captain Jos Buttler, who scored 68 runs. However, the rest of the batting lineup faltered, particularly against India’s spinners. Varun Chakravarthy led the bowling attack with figures of 3/23, while Arshdeep Singh and Axar Patel contributed with two wickets each.

Harry Brook, who was dismissed by a googly from Chakravarthy, expressed his frustration post-match, attributing some of the batting difficulties to the environmental conditions.

Harry Brook’s Statement:
“Chakravarthy is an exceptionally good bowler. But with the smog the other night, it was a lot harder to pick. Hopefully, the air is a bit clearer in Chennai, and we can see the ball better.”

Brook acknowledged the need for the team to adapt better to subcontinental conditions and improve their performance against spin.

Chasing a modest target of 133, India got off to a flying start, thanks to opener Abhishek Sharma’s explosive 79 off 34 balls. His innings included 5 fours and 8 sixes, setting a solid foundation for the team. Despite losing a few wickets, India comfortably reached the target in just 12.5 overs, securing a seven-wicket victory.

  • Sanju Samson: Contributed with 26 (20), maintaining momentum

The second T20I is scheduled for Chennai, where conditions are expected to differ. England has made squad adjustments, with Brydon Carse replacing Gus Atkinson, and Jamie Smith being added, potentially making his T20I debut.

Brook remains optimistic about England’s chances, stating, “Facing spin in T20 cricket is challenging. We need to adapt quickly and bounce back strong in the next game.”

Harry Brook’s remarks about Kolkata’s smog shed light on how environmental factors can influence match performance. As the series moves to Chennai, both teams will be keen to adjust to the new conditions, with England aiming to level the series.
