The main civil courts of origin in every State and union territory are India’s High Courts.

However, only if, by law, subordinate courts are not authorised to prosecute such cases for the lack of financial territorial jurisdiction, does a high court exercise the original civil and criminal competence.

Specially designated under state or federal law, high courts may also have original jurisdiction in certain matters.

The work of the highest courts consists in the main of appeals from lower courts and written requests in accordance with Articles 226 and 227. Writing jurisdiction is also a high court’s original competence.
