In commemoration of the International Day of Yoga on June 21, yoga sessions will be conducted not only at India’s research stations in the Arctic and Antarctic regions but also in countries situated along and near the prime meridian line. The prime meridian, which was formerly known as the Greenwich Meridian, represents the 0° longitude and serves as a reference point for measuring distances east and west around the Earth.
According to an official from the Ayush Ministry, yoga demonstrations will take place at the Indian Arctic Station – Himadri and the Antarctic Station – Bharati, in addition to countries falling along and near the Prime Meridian Line. These events are part of the initiative called the ‘Ocean Ring of Yoga,’ which aims to promote yoga activities at Indian naval bases, ports, and marine vessels across 34 countries. Some of the countries participating in these yoga sessions include the United States, Russia, Portugal, and Morocco.
Indian naval ships stationed at nine ports worldwide will also participate in a Common Yoga Protocol demonstration. Furthermore, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways will organize demonstrations in countries with which India has signed memorandums of understanding (MoUs).
Introducing ‘Yoga Bharatmala’ and ‘Yoga Sagarmala’ to Further Promote Yoga
To further promote the practice of yoga, two concepts have been introduced: ‘Yoga Bharatmala’ and ‘Yoga Sagarmala.’ ‘Yoga Bharatmala’ involves a synchronized chain of yoga demonstrations by various branches of the Indian armed forces, including the Army, Navy, Air Force, ITBP, BSF, and BRO. On the other hand, ‘Yoga Sagarmala’ focuses on promoting yoga along the Indian coastline. As part of these efforts, a yoga demonstration will also be held on the flight deck of INS Vikrant, an Indian naval ship.
Global and National Celebrations Led by Prominent Figures
The global celebration of the International Day of Yoga will be led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. At the national level, Vice President of India, Jagdeep Dhankhar, will lead the Yoga Day celebrations in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh.
International Day of Yoga: Promoting Global Recognition and Benefits
The International Day of Yoga was declared by the United Nations in 2014 to raise global awareness about yoga and its numerous benefits. It was officially designated on June 21 following a resolution proposed by India and endorsed by a record-breaking 175 member states in the United Nations General Assembly.
