A controversy arose when a Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) MLA, K Shanthakumari, allegedly made rude remarks against doctors on duty at a government hospital in Kerala. The incident took place when Kongad MLA Shanthakumari visited Palakkad District Hospital with her sick husband on Thursday evening. The incident created a stir as doctors are already protesting the brutal murder of an on-duty doctor, Vandana Das, at Kottarakkara Taluk Hospital last week.
MLA’s Misbehaviour at the Hospital
According to a doctor at the district hospital, the legislator behaved in an angry manner and made remarks that the doctors’ rude behavior towards patients was the reason behind their being taken to task. She added that “a legislator speaking like this and that too in front of other patients creates a very bad impression.” Reportedly, the MLA’s husband had a fever, so the doctors prescribed medicines. However, the MLA asked why her husband was not examined using medical devices.
Complaint Lodged Against the MLA
Following the incident, the Kerala Government Medical Officer’s Association (KGMOA) filed a complaint against the MLA. Santhakumari denied the allegation and said that she only asked whether they did not want to examine the patient using medical devices.
Doctors Protest Against the MLA
The incident has created a stir as doctors are already staging a protest condemning the brutal murder of an on-duty doctor, Vandana Das, at Kottarakkara Taluk Hospital last week. In response to the incident, the doctors have started staging a protest against the MLA.
Kerala Doctors Association’s (KDA) protest against CPM MLA K Shanthakumari’s alleged misbehaviour has intensified amid the ongoing doctors’ strike in the state. The doctors are demanding better security and protection after the recent murder of a doctor in Kottarakkara Taluk Hospital. The KDA has condemned Shanthakumari’s remarks and has demanded an apology from her. Following the incident, the Kerala Government Medical Officer’s Association (KGMOA) lodged a complaint against the MLA.
Doctors in Kerala have been on strike since the murder of Dr Vandana Das, who was stabbed to death by a patient who was brought to the hospital for a medical checkup. The accused, who was not handcuffed, got access to scissors and stabbed the doctor multiple times while she was attending to his wounds. The doctors are now demanding better security measures and protection for themselves, as well as justice for the deceased doctor.
The incident with Shanthakumari has sparked outrage among the medical fraternity, with doctors across the state calling for strict action against the MLA. The incident also highlights the growing tensions between healthcare workers and politicians, as doctors in the state continue to face verbal and physical abuse from patients and their attendants.
