The Chief Minister praised the Indian Army’s instrumental role in aiding the safe repatriation of more than 200 Meiteis who had escaped to Myanmar. The concerted efforts of the Army have been crucial in bringing these displaced individuals back to their hometown.
A Background of Turmoil
The return of these Meiteis follows a period of unrest, with violent clashes between Meitei and Kuki communities leading to tragic consequences. Since the clashes erupted on May 3, more than 160 individuals have lost their lives, and several hundred have sustained injuries, as reported by PTI.
Shared Border and Ongoing Developments
Manipur shares a 390 km border with Myanmar, and recent reports indicate the construction of a 10 km fence along the Moreh sector. This border proximity has significant implications for the state’s dynamics, especially during times of strife.
Demographics and Diversity
Meiteis constitute about 53% of Manipur’s population, primarily residing in the Imphal Valley. In contrast, tribal communities, including Nagas and Kukis, form around 40% of the population and are predominantly concentrated in the hill districts.
Tragic Incidents Continue
Amid these efforts to restore stability and ensure the safe return of displaced individuals, grim incidents persist. The discovery of mutilated bodies of three youths in Kuki Thowai village underscores the lingering challenges and dangers faced by the region. Gunfire was reported from the village, leading to the tragic discovery of the youths’ remains with signs of sharp force injuries.
Looking Forward
As Manipur navigates these complex challenges, the Chief Minister’s recognition of the Indian Army’s contributions serves as a testament to collaborative efforts in securing the well-being and return of displaced Meiteis.
