Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios has opened up about his struggle with mental health following his loss to Rafael Nadal in Wimbledon 2019. In an interview for the upcoming Netflix documentary “Break Point,” Kyrgios revealed that he spent time in a psychiatric ward due to suicidal thoughts after the tournament. This is not the first time Kyrgios has discussed his mental health concerns, as he had previously been hospitalized in London for treatment following the Wimbledon loss.
Struggles with Mental Health and Substance Abuse
Kyrgios spoke candidly about his experiences, stating that he was contemplating suicide and reached a breaking point after waking up to his father crying. Recognizing the need for help, he sought treatment in a psychiatric ward in London to address his problems. During this phase of his life, the 28-year-old tennis player admitted to drinking, abusing drugs, and experiencing deteriorating relationships with family and friends. The pressure and high expectations placed on him as a public figure became overwhelming, and he expressed a deep dissatisfaction with the personhe had become.
Impact on Kyrgios’ Career
Although Kyrgios reached the finals of the 2022 Wimbledon, where he lost to Novak Djokovic, he has faced ongoing challenges with injuries that have kept him out of competitive tennis. Recently, he returned to the Elite Tour in Stuttgart after a seven-month hiatus but suffered an early exit in the opening round. Earlier in the year, Kyrgios pleaded guilty to assaulting a former girlfriend, but he avoided conviction after apologizing. His psychologist, Sam Borenstein, confirmed that Kyrgios experienced several depressive episodes during this time and resorted to alcohol and drugs as coping mechanisms, which contributed to impulsive and reckless behavior.
