In a development leading up to the Madhya Pradesh Assembly Polls scheduled for later this year, posters targeting Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and former Chief Minister Kamal Nath were put up in Bhopal. The posters, which alleged corruption charges, were attributed to unidentified miscreants. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the main opposition party, Congress, engaged in a blame game, with both parties pointing to internal conflicts as the cause.
Allegations Against Kamal Nath: “Wanted” and “Corruption Nath” Posters Linked to Alleged Scams

Posters targeting Kamal Nath were spotted in Shahpura, labeling him as “Wanted” and “Corruption Nath.” These posters linked him to several alleged scams and featured a QR code with the caption, “Scam se bachne ke liye scan kare” (scan to prevent scams). Kamal Nath responded to the attack, stating that his political career spanning 47 years has been blemish-free, and no one has ever accused him of wrongdoing. He questioned why the BJP, in power for the past three years, has not investigated any allegations against his 15-month-long government from December 2018 to March 2020.
Counter Posters Against Chouhan: “Not Shivraj, But Scam Rule” and “Shivraj’s 18 Years of Rampant Scams and Frauds”

Following the appearance of Kamal Nath’s posters, two posters featuring Chouhan’s pictures were seen on the streets. The posters carried captions reading “Not Shivraj, But Scam Rule” and “Shivraj’s 18 years of rampant scams and frauds,” with a reference to the Vyapam scam, an admission and recruitment racket. Notably, these posters were placed in close proximity to the state Congress office. Witnesses reported the sighting of similar posters in four other locations in the state capital. Both the BJP and the Congress disassociated themselves from these posters, attributing them to internal conflicts within the opposition party.
Complaints Filed and Protests Staged: Congress Seeks FIR, Alleges Defamation
Congress workers lodged a complaint seeking the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) to identify the individuals responsible for the posters targeting Kamal Nath. They staged a protest, and the police received their written complaint, initiating an investigation. The BJP and Congress leaders traded accusations, with the Congress claiming that the BJP orchestrated these acts to discredit Chief Minister Chouhan, while the BJP alleged internal conflicts within the Congress as the cause.
Background: Congress Emerged as Single Largest Party in 2018, BJP Regained Power
In the 2018 State Assembly Elections, the Congress emerged as the single largest party, securing 114 seats in the 230-member House, while the BJP won 109 seats. After being in the opposition for 15 years, the Congress formed a coalition government under Kamal Nath’s leadership. However, in March 2020, the government collapsed when nearly two dozen MLAs loyal to Jyotiraditya Scindia resigned and subsequently joined the BJP. The BJP returned to power, and Shivraj Singh Chouhan became the Chief Minister once again.
