A Ranchi-bound Indigo flight experienced a technical snag mid-air, prompting it to return to Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport in Delhi within an hour of takeoff on Saturday morning. The incident was reported by news agency ANI, citing officials familiar with the matter.
Passenger Accounts
According to a passenger onboard the flight, the pilot made a mid-air announcement regarding the technical glitch in the aircraft, and the decision was taken to return to the IGI airport. The passenger stated that vibrations were felt onboard during the flight.
Ongoing Response
The Indigo crew assured the passengers that arrangements were being made for another aircraft to continue the journey, but it would take some time. However, the airline has not yet issued an official statement on the incident.
Previous Incidents and Penalties
Earlier on Friday, a Delhi-bound Indigo flight had to make an emergency landing at Patna due to glitches in one of its engines. The airline has been facing scrutiny from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) after experiencing four tail strike incidents on A321 aircraft within a six-month period. As a result, the DGCA imposed a penalty of Rs 30 lakh on IndiGo Airlines and directed them to make necessary amendments to their documents and procedures in accordance with DGCA requirements and Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) guidelines.
DGCA’s Special Audit
In response to the issues faced by the airline, the DGCA ordered a special audit to review IndiGo Airlines’ documentation and procedures on operations, training, engineering, and the flight data monitoring program. The audit report revealed certain systemic deficiencies in the airline’s documentation pertaining to operations, training, and engineering procedures. The DGCA issued a show-cause notice to Indigo Airlines, asking them to submit their response within the stipulated time period.
