The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced the withdrawal of Rs 2,000 notes from circulation on Friday. This decision has received criticism from Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, who claims it’s a tactic to conceal the defeat in Karnataka. CM Stalin expressed his views on social media, stating that the withdrawal of Rs 2,000 notes is a single trick used to hide the political setback. He used the hashtags #2000Note and #Demonetisation to emphasize his point.
Withdrawal Details
According to the RBI, the Rs 2,000 notes can be deposited or exchanged in banks until September 30. However, there is a limit of Rs 20,000 for each transaction. Additionally, the banks have been instructed to cease issuing Rs 2,000 notes. Despite this, the RBI assured that the notes will continue to be considered legal tender.
Political Context
CM Stalin’s statement coincides with his participation in the swearing-in ceremony of Karnataka Chief Minister designate Siddaramaiah in Bengaluru on Saturday. This event holds significance as it involves political leaders from different parties, and CM Stalin’s remark seems to reflect the ongoing political dynamics between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.
It remains to be seen how this withdrawal of Rs 2,000 notes and CM Stalin’s criticism will impact the political landscape in both states.
