Barista Coffee Faces Rs 11,000 Fine For Rs 5 Paper Cup Charge

Pancy Singh Soni from Mohali recently lodged a complaint against Barista Coffee, alleging that on December 18, 2020, she ordered hot chocolate at the Sector 35, Chandigarh store around 12:25 pm. To her surprise, she was charged Rs 5 for a paper cup, resulting in a total bill of Rs 230.
Company’s Response

Barista Coffee Company Limited countered the complaint, stating that the order in question was for takeaway purposes and not for consumption within the café premises.
Legal Consequence
In a recent development, the cafe has been directed to pay a hefty sum of Rs 11,000 as a penalty for the alleged overcharge of Rs 5 for the paper cup.
This incident sheds light on the importance of transparency in pricing and raises questions about the distinction between dine-in and takeaway charges. As consumers become increasingly vigilant, businesses must ensure clarity to avoid legal consequences.
