Tamil Nadu Weather Forecast: Thunderstorms, Rain & Cyclonic Warnings Issued

The Chennai Meteorological Department has issued an urgent weather bulletin highlighting significant developments in the Bay of Bengal and Tamil Nadu’s regional weather conditions. A low-level atmospheric circulation persists over the southeast Bay of Bengal and southern Indian states, prompting a series of alerts from April 6 to April 11, 2025.

Today’s Forecast (April 6, 2025)

Residents in South and North Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal are likely to experience light to moderate rainfall, accompanied by thunder, lightning, and strong winds with speeds ranging between 30 to 40 kmph.

Additionally, heavy rainfall is expected in the hilly regions of:

  • Coimbatore district
  • Nilgiris
  • Theni
  • Dindigul
  • Tenkasi

These areas may witness isolated intense spells, and local administrations have been advised to stay alert.

Extended Forecast: April 7–11, 2025

For the coming week, the weather will remain unstable, with light to moderate rain predicted at one or two locations across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal.

Temperature levels will also see a slight surge in parts of Tamil Nadu, where the maximum temperature is expected to be 2 to 3°C above normal on Monday and Tuesday.

Chennai and Suburban Outlook

  • Sky Condition: Partly cloudy
  • Rain Possibility: Light showers in a few areas
  • Temperature:
    • Maximum: 33–34°C
    • Minimum: 27–28°C

Chennai residents should stay prepared for short spells of rain but overall manageable conditions.

Fishermen Advisory: Cyclonic Storm Alerts in Bay of Bengal

While no warnings have been issued for coastal Tamil Nadu or Arabian Sea from April 6–9, fishermen are strongly advised to avoid the Andaman Sea and adjacent Bay of Bengal regions due to forecasted cyclonic storms with wind speeds of 35–45 kmph, gusting up to 55 kmph.

Here is the day-wise breakdown:

  • April 6: Cyclonic storms over the Andaman Sea
  • April 7: Activity expected over Andaman Sea and southeastern Bay of Bengal
  • April 8: Intensification over eastern southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining central-east Bay
  • April 9: Storms likely over northern southeast Bay of Bengal and central-east Bay

Fishermen are advised to avoid these regions till April 9 to ensure safety and avoid maritime hazards.

Recent Rainfall Highlights

Heavy downpour continued across parts of South Tamil Nadu and the Western Ghats:

  • Kozhikpoorvilai, Kanyakumari district: 19 cm
  • Gopichettipalayam, Erode district: 15 cm
  • Tiruppur district: 15 cm

These rainfall patterns highlight the increased moisture and thunderstorm activity prevailing in the region.

As Tamil Nadu enters a volatile week weather-wise, residents and coastal communities must stay informed. With cyclonic activity forecasted in the Bay of Bengal and heavy rainfall in key hill districts, proactive measures are essential. Fishermen must strictly adhere to warnings and avoid venturing into dangerous sea zones until further notice.
