Former India pacer RP Singh’s suggestion for Umran Malik
Former India pacer RP Singh has weighed in on the performance of Indian speedster Umran Malik, who has been struggling to perform in this season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Speaking to Hindustan Times, Singh said that while the debate over how Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have used Malik this season continues, as a bowler, he needs to give confidence to his captain that he can contribute towards the team.
Malik was discovered during IPL 2022, where he took 22 wickets and was the second-best Indian bowler after Yuzvendra Chahal. He earned a call to the national team and has since played eight One Day Internationals (ODIs) and eight Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is), picking up 13 and 11 wickets, respectively.
Malik’s recent performance in IPL 2023 has been below par, with former cricketers criticizing him for not living up to his potential. In a match against Delhi Capitals, he was smashed for 22 runs in the only over he bowled, which further fueled the criticism.
RP Singh, however, has pointed out that Malik has the speed that can make him a go-to bowler for the team, especially when bowling at the speed of 150 kmph. Singh believes that the captain expects such bowlers to take wickets in situations or conditions where no other bowler has managed to get a breakthrough.
What Malik needs to improve
According to RP Singh, the key for Malik to become a different bowler altogether is to learn to swing the ball like Dale Steyn and bowl cutters effectively. He believes that Malik’s inability to swing the ball is what is holding him back from becoming a better bowler.
Despite the criticisms, Malik still has time to improve and prove his worth in the IPL and the national team. Singh’s suggestion could be a turning point for Malik, and it remains to be seen how he will perform in the upcoming matches.
