Earlier this year, my friends and I watched countless days playing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 as we tried desperately to fill the lobby with the chaotic rounds of Free-For-All and Team Deathmatch.
It was a rather unsuccessful effort, since the same selection of people who have played since Modern Warfare 2 was initially launched in 2009 continued.
Although the audience has become smaller and smaller over the years, there remains a sense of passion, with some people refusing to let one of the most beloved shooters of the novices in the night go away.
Activision has not yet switched off its servers, so it must be aware of this permanent audience, but unfortunately it is not enough to make Modern Warfare 2 an even game-largely due to broken lobbies and the lack of support from today’s console hardware. Where’s our master, then?
Modern Warfare Remastered
Because many of the publisher’s studios have been moved into the project, it is clear that the majority of Activision’s attention is paid to Call of Duty: Warzone, the obscene cash maker that continues to attract millions of players, especially now that Toys For Bob has been turned into a project.
It ticks all the boxes of a cynical live service, yet the dough is there, so there is no reason to change the tide.
The genre has continued to develop technically, but with each new entry the combination of rapid gunplay and constant progress is what prevents us from coming back. Implement this into a multiplayer remaster of Modern Warfare 2 and I will play it for months.
Because of Warzone’s popularity, I’m sceptical that Activision will devote resources to a standalone remaster of Modern Warfare 2’s multiplayer. I think it will most likely appear in a seasonal update in the form of maps, characters and weapons inspired by the 2009 classic for its live service. But I can continue to dream and it could happen one day-my mommy and I would love to see it.
