Nobody can deny that the Xbox Series X is brimming with brand-new exclusive games, but that could change as a Microsoft executive has hinted that Xbox Games Studios is working on a new IP “that’s going to be blowing your mind.”
Those are the words of Xbox’s head of gaming services, Ben Decker, who told our sister site GamesRadar that Microsoft’s game development arm is working on a brand new title that does not appear to be related to the heavy-hitting Halo or Gears franchises.
“That’s why we made the investments we did,” Decker explained. “We have 23 studios around through Xbox and Bethesda collaborating on Halo, Forza, Fallout, and new IP that we haven’t even discussed yet it will blow your mind. “We can give all of that into Game Pass on first day,” Decker explained.
Members of the Xbox Game Pass subscription service can currently access more than 100 games, including major titles from Bethesda and EA, as well as a mix of Xbox games dating back to the original Xbox. However, The Medium is the only truly new game available on Game Pass that appears to have been developed primarily for the new Xbox consoles.
The service has a lot of Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S optimised games, but it is arguably lacking in serious next-gen titles. According to Decker’s words, that could all change, though he didn’t specify what the new IP might be.
Given that Halo Infinite and Fable 4 are on the way, RPG Avowed may be a platform exclusive, and the Gears franchise is available on Game Pass, we’d wager that this new IP will be far removed from such games.
Xbox On Azure Cloud
Perhaps Xbox Games Studios is developing a brand-new massively multiplayer online game, as these are quite popular. Or it could have some seemingly niche or highly ambitious game that makes use of some of Microsoft’s broader technology; for example, AI with machine learning backed up by the Azure cloud.
We hope to hear more at E3 2021, which will be a virtual event with a Microsoft presence. While the Xbox Series X did not launch with a slew of exclusive games, it appears that the second half of the year and 2022 will be the years when Redmond’s new console truly shines. And, hopefully, finding an Xbox Series X restock won’t be such a nightmare by then.
