The Territorial Army (TA) company, which was deployed under the Yamuna Cleaning Project to clean the river, has been called off. This decision comes after the TA was assigned to protect and clean the Yamuna floodplains in Delhi, as part of the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) efforts.
TA’s Temporary Deployment

According to a senior NMCG official, the TA had been temporarily deployed for the Yamuna cleaning work in Delhi. While the TA has been actively involved in river cleaning efforts in other cities like Kanpur, Varanasi, and Prayagraj, its deployment in Delhi was only for a specific period. The primary objective of the TA’s presence was to create awareness among the people and prevent the dumping of waste into the Yamuna.
Withdrawal and Alternate Measures
As reported by the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC), the Territorial Army has been withdrawn from the Yamuna cleaning project since June 30. Following this withdrawal, immediate alternate measures need to be put in place to continue the river cleaning efforts. The DPCC suggests raising a new 3-company based TA battalion for the Yamuna and Najafgarh Drain in Delhi, similar to the 137 ECO TA Battalion located at Prayagraj for the Ganga. This proposal needs to be taken up with the NMCG for consideration.
Challenges and Recommendations
Another NMCG official, aware of the developments, highlights the difficulty in accommodating a request for a TA battalion specifically for the Yamuna. Instead, the official suggests deploying civil defense volunteers from the city government to carry out the river cleaning activities.
