The northeastern state of Assam is grappling with severe flooding caused by heavy rainfall. Continuous rainfall has resulted in the inundation of villages, towns, and farmlands across several parts of the state. According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), more than 33,000 people have been affected as multiple rivers in different areas of the state have surpassed the danger level. Lakhimpur district is the most severely affected, with over 25,200 people impacted. Dibrugarh and Tinsukia are also significantly affected, with over 3,800 and 2,700 people affected, respectively. The situation remains critical, with 142 villages submerged and approximately 1,510.98 hectares of crop areas damaged.
Widespread Erosion and Landslides
Biswanath, Bongaigaon, Dibrugarh, Kokrajhar, Lakhimpur, Majuli, Morigaon, Nagaon, Sivasagar, Sonitpur, South Salmara, and Udalguri districts have witnessed extensive erosion due to the floods. Additionally, landslides triggered by heavy rainfall have been reported in Dima Hasao and Karimganj districts.
Infrastructure Damage
The floodwaters have caused significant damage to infrastructure such as embankments, roads, bridges, and other crucial facilities. Sonitpur, Lakhimpur, Cachar, Dhemaji, Goalpara, Nagaon, Udalguri, Chirang, Dibrugarh, Kamrup, Karbi Anglong, Karimganj, Bongaigaon, Majuli, Morigaon, Sivasagar, and South Salmara districts have been particularly affected.
Red Alert and Weather Warnings
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for several districts of Assam for the next five days. The IMD’s Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Guwahati predicts heavy to very heavy rainfall in lower districts such as Kokrajhar, Chirang, Baksa, Barpeta, and Bongaigaon. The districts of Dhubri, Kamrup, Kamrup Metropolitan, Nalbari, Dima Hasao, Cachar, Goalpara, and Karimganj are also expected to experience heavy rainfall. The weather office has further issued an orange alert for Tuesday and a yellow alert for the following two days. These alerts indicate the need for immediate action, preparedness, and vigilance, respectively.
