Cheteshwar Pujara was instrumental in India’s six-wicket victory over Australia on Day 3 of the second Test between India and Australia at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. With only two games remaining in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Rohit Sharma and his team now lead the competition 2-0.
The 35-year-old batsman scored the game’s winning runs and finished with 31 runs, 74 not outs, and no wickets. KS Bharat, who batted at the other end, was unbeaten, scoring 23 runs off 22 balls. The hosts lost opener KL Rahul early in the chase, leaving them needing another 115 runs to win, but Pujara and captain Rohit stood firm. Rohit was out for 31 runs, and Virat Kohli and Pujara took the blame. When Kohli left after adding 20 more runs, India’s score had dropped to 69/3. In addition, the former captain became the fastest player in international cricket history to reach 25,000 runs, doing so in 549 innings. Shreyas Iyer followed Kohli out, and the two of them combined for only 12 more runs before they were both dismissed.
Ravindra Jadeja took seven wickets on Day 3’s first morning, effectively ending Australia’s batting. After being 61/1 overnight, the visitors were bowled out for 113 in their second innings, with three wickets taken by Ravichandran Ashwin.
Following the game, Australian captain Pat Cummins gave Pujara a jersey signed by the entire team. Pujara has 7052 runs at a high of 206* in 100 Tests as of this writing, with 19 hundreds among them. The BCCI posted a photo of Cummins handing the jersey to Pujara with the caption: “Cricket legend Pat Cummins personifies the spirit of the game. Cheteshwar Pujara What a thoughtful and kind gesture! #IndianTeam vs. #Australia “.
Pujara spoke after the game about his experience and how he felt he contributed to the team’s victory. “It’s been a fantastic Test match; I didn’t score any runs in the first ten minutes, but I knew I’d have a chance if I stuck around for the first ten minutes. It was a one-of-a-kind experience, and I was nervous about performing in front of my entire family. What a rush it was to cross the winning boundary, and I’m excited for the next two Tests.”
“We’ve been consistently good over the last few years, and this is our second championship in as many years. The guys did a fantastic job. My expectation was that we’d go after a fish weighing between 200 and 250 grammes, so we prepared accordingly “He went on to explain.
