In a move aimed at tackling the proliferation of online betting ads, the central government has issued a stern caution to media organizations. As the highly anticipated Asia Cup and Cricket World Cup draw near, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has directed newspapers, television networks, digital media platforms, and social media channels to halt the dissemination of advertisements and promotional material related to betting and gambling platforms. Failure to comply with this directive could lead to legal actions under various laws and regulations.
Risks and Concerns
The advisory underscores the significant risks associated with advertisements from gambling and betting platforms, particularly for vulnerable groups like youth and children. Beyond financial and socio-economic risks, these ads have been linked to money laundering networks, raising concerns about the country’s financial security.
Asia Cup 2023 and Cricket World Cup
This advisory comes in the lead-up to the Asia Cup 2023, scheduled to commence on August 30. With India declining to play in Pakistan due to strained political relations, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is hosting the tournament, while India will compete in Sri Lanka. India’s first match against arch-rivals Pakistan is set for September 2 at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium. The tournament could witness multiple high-stakes clashes between the two teams.
ODI World Cup and IND vs PAK Fixture
Despite India’s absence from the Asia Cup in Pakistan, the Pakistan Men’s Cricket Team has received the green light to participate in the ODI World Cup in India. The much-awaited IND vs PAK World Cup fixture is slated to take place at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Originally scheduled for October 15, the match has been rescheduled by a day due to clashes with the Navaratri festival in Gujarat.
