Friday marked Rafael Nadal’s advancement to his 14th French Open final after Alexander Zverev withdrew from their semi-final due to a horrific right ankle injury. Zverev was forced to leave the court in a wheelchair after twisting his ankle and trailing 7-6 (10/8), 6-1 after more than three hours of play. After wailing in pain and shedding tears, medical personnel helped Zverev off the court. A few minutes later, the 25-year-old returned to the court on crutches and conceded the match.
“It’s very unfortunate and difficult for him,” Nadal said. “He was having an incredible tournament and is a great colleague on the tour.”
“I am aware of how diligently he works to achieve a Grand Slam. He had terrible luck at the time. I am confident that he will win multiple times. I wish him all the best.
It had been a very challenging match. After three hours, the second set was not even completed. When he plays as well as he did today, it is one of the tour’s most difficult challenges.”
“To be in the Roland Garros final is without a doubt a dream for me,” he continued, “but to finish that way… I was in the small room with Sascha, and his tears prompted me to wish him well.
