A 15 years old mango tree has become quite an attraction in the Uttar Pradesh district of Saharanpur since the single tree produces 121 fruit varieties!
Growing in the Bagh area of district company, the unique tree is an experiment that was initiated five years ago by horticulturalists in order to develop and experiment with new types of mangoes.
Saharanpur is a mango manufacturer number one already. Mango is widely practised in the fruit belt of the area.
This led to analyses of new types of mango,” Horticulture and Studies co-director Bhanu Prakash Ram 121 varieties of mango branches were planted on a single mango tree, by the Joint Head of the Experiment and Training Centre, Rajesh PrasadThe tree was taken care of by a separate nursery.
The mangoes of this tree are now found in various kinds, such as Dussehri, Langra, Chaunsa, Ramkela, Amrapali, Saharanpur Arun, Saharanpur Saurabh, Saharanpur Gaurav and Saharanpur Rajiv,” the local official said.
Other mango varieties growing on this tree include Lucknow Safeda, Tommy at Kings, Pusa Surya, Sensation, Rataul, Kalmi Maldah Mango, Bombay, Smith, Mangifera Jalonia, Gola Bulandshahr, Laranku, LR Special, Alampur Benisha, and Asojia Deoband.
According to the researchers, work on new species is ongoing in order to produce better varieties of mangoes.
According to officials, those who enjoy mangoes can conduct similar experiments on trees planted in their farms or kitchen gardens.
