Tamil Nadu Launches ‘Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thogai’ Scheme, Providing Monthly Assistance of Rs 1000 To Women Family Heads

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Stalin has announced the implementation of the ‘Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thogai’ scheme, which provides monthly cash assistance to women family heads. The scheme is scheduled to be rolled out on September 15.

Eligibility Criteria

Under the operational guidelines, women with an annual family income of less than Rs 2.5 lakh and families owning land not exceeding 5 acres (wetland) or 10 acres (dryland) are eligible for the scheme. Additionally, families with an annual household electricity consumption below 3,600 units can also avail of the benefits.

Implementation Details

During the initial meeting with senior officials and district collectors, Chief Minister Stalin emphasized the significance of the scheme, anticipating around 1.5 crore applications from one crore beneficiaries. He urged district collectors to diligently identify eligible beneficiaries and ensure that arrangements are made at special camps to prevent any stampedes. Furthermore, officials are instructed not to deny anyone from the scheme, even if they lack ration or Aadhaar cards.

The monthly financial assistance of Rs 1,000 for women family heads was a campaign promise made by the DMK party. The state government has allocated Rs 7,000 crore for the scheme in the Budget 2023-34.

Commemoration and Monitoring

The launch of the scheme on September 15 coincides with the birth centenary of former Chief Minister CN Annadurai. To oversee the implementation, a state-level committee will be formed under Chief Secretary Shiv Das Meena. The scheme is named after former Chief Minister Kalaignar Karunanidhi in recognition of his efforts towards women’s empowerment, such as ensuring women’s recruitment in the Tamil Nadu police force, providing 33% reservation for women in local bodies, and appointing women teachers for primary schools.
