Manav Kaul, a renowned film actor known for his diverse work profile, recently shared an incident where he was mistaken as a suspect in the 1997 murder case of T-Series founder Gulshan Kumar. In an interaction with Siddharth Kannan, Kaul revealed that someone in his residential society misunderstood him and his friends’ activities.
Misunderstood Activities and Complaint
Kaul, along with four other individuals, used to reside in Dahisar. Due to financial constraints, they would stay awake until 2 am, have tea, and then sleep. The following day, they would skip breakfast and wake up late, directly having lunch. Throughout the day, they would visit studios, Film City, and meet people, returning home at night. A resident in their society found it suspicious that these five men would return late at night, engage in gambling, and then leave the next day. Consequently, a complaint was filed, leading to a chain of events.
Encounter with the Police
One night, while playing cards, Kaul and his friends’ house was surrounded by the police. They entered the premises and directly asked, “Gulshan Kumar ko kisne maara?” (Who killed Gulshan Kumar?). While Kaul found the situation somewhat amusing, a few others in the group became scared. Eventually, they were taken to the Dahisar police station for further investigation.
Reflections on the Experience
When asked if he was scared during the incident, Kaul mentioned that he was very young at the time, and it felt like Mumbai was welcoming him in such a manner. Later, while working with T-Series on the film “Tumhari Sulu,” Kaul visited the office and noticed Gulshan Kumar’s picture at the entry. This sight triggered a thought in his mind, “hmmm…kaha se shuruaat hui thi, aur kaha hai hum” (hmmm…where did it all begin, and where are we now).
The incident highlights the misunderstandings and suspicions that can arise in residential societies, and how it affected Manav Kaul’s perception of his journey in the entertainment industry.
